Much better than I expected, 30 Aug 2009

Don't let the cartoon characters fool you, this game is very well done and has quite a bit of depth. I'm over 30 and thought my son would like it, but I ended up playing it much more than he has. The controls are great, the animation and graphics are first rate, funny story and dialogue, and a good variety of gameplay. Some levels you are squashing bugs, some levels you are riding a hoverbike, some are platform challenges. Easily one of my top 2 or three fav. PSP games.

    Great Game!, 2 May 2009

The bottom line is this game is one of the best ive played in awhile for the PSP. The game has outstanding graphics and incredible sound. It has a good plot and good single player. Here are some pros and cons...

Pros- great graphics, great sound, great single player.

Cons. Rediculousley short, and the multiplayer dissapointed me alot.

Yeah the multiplayer isnt too great in my opinoin. Its kind of like a rock paper sissor match with bugs you collect throughout the single player adventure. Each bug has different strenghts and weaknesses. And you can find potions and tokens throughout the game that increases your bugs stats for that match. I kind of wanted something a bit more exciting though. But its not too big of a deal because the single player story make up for the multiplayer, its amazing. Overall.... great graphics, gameplay, sound.... if you see it at the store for a price you like pick it up, i think you will like it.

    BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 17 Mar 2009

    To cut to the chase;

    1. The game is set in Haven city while you are trying to rescue Jak from prison.

    2. Although the story follows a classic J&D approach with set missions to complete, there is one thing to be noticed; the actual ground that is available to be accessed is deceptive. There are red barriers stopping you and you can not get out the city, explore the entire haven, or 'jak' any rides.

    3. It is a great game, with amazing psp graphics, and story line that leaps forward at the end. My one gripe is that it has no guns, but it does have a gas cannister with 3 add ons.

To sum up, it is a really good game with dream sequences that could really extend game play. Just don't expext anything identical to J&K 1 and 2.

    Furry Legacy, 7 Mar 2009

If you have played previous Jak and Daxter games you'll love this one! This game takes place during Jak's kidnapping in the second Jak and Daxter game.

Pro's: -Fun camera angles make the game more exciting on certain levels ( ex. fuel tank level)

-Plays like the previous Jak games but with a flyswatter and cans as weapons.

-The voice-acting stays to its original characters with humor.

    -Daxter's minigames are spin-off of block-buster movies.

    -New areas never seen before

-Lighting bugs on fire is fun

-Battle 3 "real" bug monsters, like the ones Jak fights.

    Con's:

-The game says drive "vehicles" but you really only drive one(a scooter) throughout town, the other 3 are for mission areas only.

-The area expansion is shrunk. Unlike the previous games, your not going to be able to explore much around town. Some areas aren't in the game.

    -Can't steal vehicles.

-The camera angle can be a nuisance at times, especially if your trying to see a boss flying around during a fight.

-Seems shorter than the previous games.

    -Daxter can't swim

-Swatting bugs may steer older audience away

Overall this is a good, fun portable game for the psp and to any fan of the series.

    Awsome!, 12 Feb 2009

I love it! The game programmers did a very good job on this one. Actually, there are very few weapons, and the only thing you can purchase is minigames and some videos. However, that didn't matter. The creativity, (like killing bugs the size of buildings and hovering using a bug spray), the span of the areas you could play in, and the intensity of the game were incredible. However, one thing makes me really mad. Once you beat it you'd think you'd either get a second playthrough with all your stuff, or at least go back to the last save point. But no, you end up in front of Osmo's shop, which has been destroyed, and are stuck in an area smaller than a boss arena. I am still trying to find a way out, but I cannot find one. How lame is that?

I still recomend this game, since it takes a while to get to that point and is very fun, but once you get there, you may as well either start a new acount and play again, put it in some corner of your house and play it again when you find it two years later, or chuck it in the trash.

Still, you should definetely get this game, unless you're one of those people who can beat Fable or Zelda in a day, and cannot find a game hard enough that you don't die even once.

Full of Fuzzy Ferret-y Fun, 24 Jan 2009

I got this title with my PSP, and I've really enjoyed it. Having played "Jak & Daxter" end to end and made my way mostly through "Jak II" (which disappoints), I'm glad to say that "Daxter" seems to have taken the best elements of Jak II and put them in a smaller title that's more fun to play.

"Daxter" is set in a time gap that takes place at the beginning of Jak II: Jak has been captured, and Daxter has to make his way around the city that they're both trapped in. As the name implies, you play the furry "Ossel" sidekick Daxter throughout the game, and you're all on your own. In order to make his way around the city, Daxter gets a job with an exterminator. From there it starts to resemble Jak II: it's the city, but there are more unpassable barriers and no bystanders or crowds. Gone is the car-stealing, gone are the paranoid guards that swarm over you in Jak II, and in their place are some fun (and funny) encounters. Adding to the experience are colorful environments with very few boundaries and a professionally done game score that occasionally ventures into charming Danny Elfman territory.

What makes the gameplay enjoyable and clever are the different environments you have to explore. Each has the same goal of "get through to the other side", but along the way you'll find different puzzles to solve. At one point you're sneaking through a series of tunnels, at another you're moving through a massive fish "factory", melting ice blocks in clever ways to unlock goodies.

And speaking of goodies...as you discover Precursor Orbs, you unlock a hilarious series of movie-themed minigames. Spoofs of The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones and more involve pushing buttons in sequence and rhythm. The minigames in turn unlock more goodies in the main game: Daxter might learn a special move, or improve his speed or health. I also found the ability to sync with a PS2 or PS3 running "Jak X: Combat Racing" and unlock hidden characters.

The main game contains various hidden secrets, too: for example, I crawled behind a crate and found an item which unlocked the ability for Daxter to wear a ridiculous Sly Cooper mask. And in case that's not enough to break the monotony, various side stories have you running races, chasing giant bugs (and lobbing little bombs at them), or crop-dusting massive flowers on a rocket-scooter.

If you like platformers, you can't go wrong with Daxter on the PSP. If you're a fan of the series, don't be disappointed that it's been trimmed a little for the small screen: just take it as a fun aside that you can take with you on the go.

Good beginner game, 31 Oct 2008

This game was fun to play until you beat it. Then there really isn't anything to do unless you want to go back and try to get every single egg that you ever missed......

Decent game to package a PSP with.

Some of the levels didn't really have any real sense of direction to them so many beginners may feel overwhelmed/ get frustrated.

I found a dead end in the Ice level that frustrated me for quite a while.

Good PSP Platformer, 2 Aug 2008

This game is the platformer by which other PSP platformers should be judged. I believe that handheld games should be easy to pick up for a few minutes and then put down. It seems like so many PSP games are simply PS2 games for the small screen, but I generally don't play my PSP for hours at a time. Anyway, the game is generally fun and intuitive but some portions seem based more on memorization than they should be.

one of the most creative games out there, 15 Jan 2008

in daxter u have to save jak from the guards and when u finish the story u have to make sure that u killed all the bugs or else they wont give u 100%. and now lets talk about the game for any person who likes adventure games this will be a good game for u. u get gernede, fire and acid/flying tool. so u get to kill bugs in multiplayer mode u select bugs u unlocked and u fight with them the levels are pretty cool and creative (and for a little secret im not a very good video game player)and im doing pretty good on it. so its not hard hard its more like meduim hard. and u get to ride floating vehicles and race to not get caught the whole game is pretty hard but without a doubt this is a very good game. i dont even like video games so i bought this PSP just to play music, videos, pitures but when i saw all these game on the PSP like Daxter , Syphon Fitler, GTA liberty city & vice city, family guy i just knew i had to get those games. and to let u know a little secret why is daxter a greatest hits game because it sold more than 500,000 copies of the game and u still dont like it just give it a chance it ill probaly be good and u cannot get it on no other platform but the PSP (so loved the game. very good game. Excellent, 21 Mar 2007

This game is one of the best games you will find on the psp, along with syphon filter:dark mirror, tekken dark ressurection and killzone liberation. It is not to hard but certainly chalenging enough. Its lush blend of of exotic environments range from jungles to fish factorys! There are 4 different vehicles you can use in different situations. For instance on the first level you can use your own private scooter to travel to your HQ and teleport to a very good jungle level where you can go where ever you want spraying bug repellent everywhere. As for wepons, you start off with a bug squatter but you will soon get a bug spray gun which can then be used once upgraded as a jetpack, flamethrower and a projectile launcher. This game has lots of veriety and if you like the original jak and daxter or jak 2, jak 3 or rachet and clank ect. you will love this game.

Good graphics, good level design, lots of fun. I never owned a PS2 so I haven't played any of the previous Jax and Daxter games. Judged on it's own merits this is a really good 3d platformer. Very, Very Good., 15 Dec 2006

Daxter is a game set in Haven City, between the end of Jak 1 and beginning of Jak 2. You play as an Ottsel, called Daxter, who is part of a Pest/Bug Control Company. You are assigned to different missions, each in a different area of Haven City where you get to ride your Hoverbike. This is a nice touch as you get to explore Haven City and get familiar with the game. There are several mini-games which are unlocked by collecting precursor orbs. These games are fun but mostly the same, but nonetheless, they provide a change in gameplay. The mini-games are in the style of films etc and my personal favourites are the Matrix level and Braveheart level. Completing mini-games by getting high scores, improves Daxter's health. There is also a very nice Bug Combat mode where you play as different bugs in a rock, paper, scissors type game. In this mode you take it in turns to select your move, Defend, Melee or Range. Your success largely depends on luck but you can improve your bugs stats by collecting vials in the missions. Once you've trained your bug, you can even face your mates, using the PSP's wireless.

Daxter provides the player with fresh and sharp graphics. The visual and auditory aspects of the game are top notch, the voices are great and there is nothing to fault. The gameplay is fun but most of all playable. It's easy to pick up but it still provides a challenge. This game is pretty substabtial and the main story will knock up a good 10-20 hours depending on how good you are. There is bug combat and mini-games but why didn't this game get the full 5 stars? The game loses appeal quite quickly because the gameplay in the main story hasn't got much variety. The combat isn't engaging enough to make you want to keep on playing constantly. Saying that, the game feels fresh if you haven't played it in a few weeks.

In all, this game is top notch on all fronts and there are several nice features that will help you stack up the hours. If you're a platformer fan, this is probably the best on PSP.

    Dax...Rox., 26 Jul 2006

As a newcomer to the PSP gaming world I was struggling to find good games. I already own Wipeout, Pro Evo and GTA. I was hooked on GTA and was thoroughly engaged in it. I'm using the past tense as I bought Daxter after reading reviews on Amazon. Currently two days into it and I'm thoroughly enjoying the wonderful world that it is. Fantastic gameplay, graphics, movement, story and music combine to provide a whole new gaming alternative to GTA (the other best game on the PSP). Even if you're not a "platform" kind of person - this combines some nice puzzles, some excellent mini-games (and they really are good!) along with some great shoot-em-up action. If this title is anything to go by - the future for the PSP looks very bright indeed.

    PSP's Sonic, 30 Jun 2006

After a number of poor games this was a breath of fresh air.

I already own and have enjoyed the 3 PS2 J&D titles.

At first glance I was dubious, I was sure there was no way this could match up to those original games on the PS2.

WRONG - this is one mother of a game. By far the best for the PSP at present. If you own a PSP do yourself a favour and buy this. If you know someone with a PSP do them a favour and buy this...

Living in hope that this is a sign of things to come...

The platforming action is frantic; the hunts for orbs fun. But by far one of the most enjoyable parts to this game has to be the mini-games. I will not ruin them here though I am sure others will have but all are hilarious and are a nice break from the frantic pace of the game.

Only once or twice did the refresh rate suffer - but with the graphics of the PS2 squeezed onto the disc it was barely noticeable.

    Now where is Daxter 2.

one of the best , but to short !!!!, 14 Jun 2006

Ive always been a fan of the jak and rachet series, so i had high hopes when i heard Daxter was coming out. This is the best platform game on PSP, and is alot of fun to play.Graphics = 5/5

    Sound = 4/5, Gameplay = 5/5.

This game would get a full 5 Stars if it wasnt for the game actually being incredibly easy and short. It took me 3 Months to complete Jak 2, but then all the games started to get easy !

Jak 3 = 3 Days Daxter = 2 Days (while having to go to school).

    Wow!!!**??@!!!!!, 4 May 2006

I was looking for a reason to buy a PSP, and (after reading the review in a PS2 mag), Daxter was it. My God, IT. IS. AMAZING!!!!

I'm a BIG fan of platform games (of course, being a GIRL, well 33 actually, but who's counting?!!), and LOVE games such as J&D and R&C. To be honest, I wasn't expecting a lot because of the screen size, but from the SECOND the game loaded any fears were quoshed.

I can't remember the last time I had a conversation lasting longer than, oh, a minute with my husband. Work, family, friends housework and even my rabbit have become distant memories............

He can still use his really intresting gadgets, including fly swatters and acid guns. You also get to play dream sequences, these include the matrix and lord of the rings!. Best platformer on PSP so far, 23 Apr 2006

Now, having read reviews of this game, I went out and brought it, and I was far from disappointed.

The story is set when Jak is thrown into prison-what exactly did his furry side-kick, a sort of cross between a meer cat and ferret, (Daxter) do with himself? Exterminating bugs, thats what!

Graphically, this is by far the best the PSP has to offer. Graphics rival the PS2 counterparts, and will have you feeling reminiscent of Jak 1 and 2. The environments are detailed and lush ranging from hotels, to mines, and to the city. Character design is awsome, using the same models for characters from the previous games, but a greater variety of enemies would have been nice.

The gameplay has you jumping, running and completing objectives, normally squashing bugs, collecting precursor orbs and precious gems. Basically a mix of previous games. Whilst environments feel slightly more restrictive compared to original titles, there is still plenty to do and explore.

The sound is brilliant, and the voice acting is really good too. There are some genuinely funny parts to the game.

Downsides-too quick to complete, its only worth about six to eight hours gameplay (but this depends on whether or not you want to collect every orb and every bug), but on the plus side, its easy to get to grips with, fun for adults and kids alike- and a great addition to any PSP collection.

Best of PSP to date, 22 Apr 2006

This game feels like it was really made with the PSP in mind. You can play for a short or long while, you don't feel like you're fighting the controls because there isn't a second analogue stick, and it looks fabulous. I don't really consider myself a major platform fan - so far my favourite PSP games have been GTA:LCS and Lumines - but this tops both of them for just getting it right.

Like some other PSP games, it takes a small part of the wider universe of PlayStation gaming and makes a new game out of it: the story itself takes place chronologically at the start of Jak 2. In terms of gameplay, it's a real platformer, rather than action adventure, though the levels are all accessible via parts of Haven city so it feels a bit like both at times.

This has everything: gameplay, control, visuals. It's light and fun, but engaging. Above all what I really appreciated was its balance and fairness - it never feels like you can't progress simply because the computer is cheating you. You have to be good enough, for sure, but the learning curve is right, and small weapons upgrades keep things interesting. You never get held up just because of poor controls (though, in the final boss fight, the camera can cause problems - I think that is my only complaint in an entire game).

If anything, it's a little short, but it's certainly the finest game on the PSP so far. I strongly recommend it.

    A great action platformer!, 5 Apr 2006

I'm not really a fan of these type of games but Daxter has much more to offer than your standard Crash Bandicoot type platformer. Firstly the music, sound and graphics are outstanding! The game basically involves completing several objectives on each mission. There's the main objective that has been laid out for you, which might consist of killing enemies, destroying insect hives, or collecting objects. As you're playing through, you can also choose to do two optional secondary objectives, which are reminiscent of Jak games of old, collecting Metal Bug gems and precursor orbs. Though the mission is generally straightforward, completing the secondary objectives can sometimes prove to be a real challenge. Fortunately, you only need to clear the main objective to progress the story, so you can always return to collect all the items later. Playing cleanup is also easier later, since you'll often have better weapons and moves to get through the level more quickly. In fact, the way this works is done extraordinarily well, giving you quite an incentive to play through again to hunt for all the items. There are also lots of funny film themed side games..matrix, braveheart and indiana jones are just some of the themes. In a nutshell this game sets new standards for what the PSP is capable of, especially when it comes to graphics.
